Specialized Care for TMJ & Orofacial Pain

TMJ disorders and orofacial pain can be complex and are often misunderstood. At Museum Dental Center, care is focused on accurate diagnosis, conservative management, and clear communication so patients understand both the cause of their symptoms and their treatment options.

A Comprehensive Diagnostic Approach

  • Detailed medical and dental history
  • Evaluation of jaw joints, muscles, and range of motion
  • Assessment of contributing factors such as posture, habits, stress, and sleep
  • Differentiation between muscle-related and joint-related conditions
  • Identification of inflammatory, mechanical, or nerve-related pain patterns
  • Clear explanation of findings and recommended next steps

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment and helps avoid unnecessary or ineffective interventions.

Conservative, Evidence-Based Treatment

Treatment recommendations are based on your specific diagnosis, symptoms, and contributing factors. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and support long-term stability using the least invasive, most evidence-based approach.

  • Custom oral appliances when indicated
  • Education on jaw function and pain triggers
  • Behavioral and lifestyle guidance
  • Collaboration with physical therapists and other healthcare providers
  • Medication coordination when appropriate

Many patients experience gradual improvement over time when treatment is tailored to their specific diagnosis and needs.

TMJ & Orofacial Pain – Frequently Asked Questions

These are common questions from patients seeking TMJ and orofacial pain care in Los Angeles. Answers are general and will be tailored to your specific diagnosis during your evaluation.

What is TMJ (TMD) and how is it different from jaw pain?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint. TMD (temporomandibular disorders) is a broader term that includes joint-related conditions, muscle-related pain, and functional problems such as limited opening or jaw locking. Many people use “TMJ” to describe these conditions in general.

Can TMJ disorders cause headaches or ear symptoms?

Yes. Jaw muscles and joint structures can refer pain to the temples, forehead, cheeks, and ear region. Some patients experience headaches, ear fullness, ringing, or ear pain related to jaw dysfunction. A proper evaluation helps determine whether symptoms are TMJ-related or due to another cause.

Do I need imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or CBCT?

Not always. Many TMJ and muscle-related conditions can be diagnosed through a comprehensive clinical examination. Imaging may be recommended in specific situations, such as persistent locking, suspected joint changes, trauma, or when the diagnosis is unclear.

Is a night guard the same as a TMJ appliance?

Not necessarily. Over-the-counter or generic night guards are primarily designed to protect teeth. TMJ appliances are prescribed and adjusted based on a specific diagnosis and treatment goal. When indicated, a custom appliance is selected to address joint or muscle-related issues appropriately.

Is TMJ treatment usually conservative?

Yes. Most TMJ and orofacial pain conditions respond well to conservative, non-surgical approaches. Treatment may include education, behavior modification, physical therapy collaboration, and custom oral appliances when appropriate. Surgery is rarely a first-line option.

What should I bring to my TMJ evaluation?

If available, bring a list of medications, prior dental or medical records, imaging reports, and any previous oral appliances. A brief timeline of symptoms—when they started and what affects them—can also be helpful.

How long does it take to see improvement?

Improvement depends on the diagnosis, severity, and contributing factors such as stress, habits, and sleep. Many patients notice gradual improvement over weeks to months when treatment is tailored to their specific condition and followed consistently.
